SkillsUSA logoTelecom students competed at the SkillsUSA District 4 Leadership and Skills Conference on February 24 at New Horizons Regional Education Center in Hampton.

SkillsUSA strives to ensure America has a skilled workforce, with students, teachers and industry working together to achieve that goal.

District 4 includes Newport News, Hampton, Yorktown, Gloucester, Poquoson, Williamsburg and the Eastern Shore.

Eight Telecom students competed at the conference, in various categories.

Summer Eley won first place in the Essay category, and the Telecom Quiz Bowl team placed third in their competition. The Quiz Bowl team consisted of Muriel Gamble, Carmen Scott, Cheyanne Brooks, Courtney Luther, and Deon Davis.

Eleanor Stuck competed in Job Interview and Hannah Pennant competed in Current Events, but the results of those competitions have not yet been determined. Some of the competitions are not complete because students from the Eastern Shore could not participate due to weather conditions that affected their travel.

Telecom Instructor Carl Daniels Jr. escorted the students to the competition.

The State Leadership Conference and Skills Championship will be held April 15-16 in Fredericksburg, and the 52nd annual national event will be June 20-24 in Louisville, Ky.
