NNPS-TV's production team covered the Teachers of the Year Awards Banquet, which was held in May. The video has been edited for television and is airing on Cox Channel 47, Verizon Fios Channel 17, and on NNPS-TV's Roku and Apple TV channels (live stream). It can also be seen on nnpstv.com (live stream) during the TV broadcasts.

The Teachers of the Year Awards Banquet honors the top teachers as selected by their colleagues. Teachers of the Year hold that title for the entire following year (2019-20).

Each school selects a Teacher of the Year, and from that group, three teachers are selected as the Elementary, Middle, and High School Teachers of the Year. One of those three is then chosen as the Division Teacher of the Year.

This year, Andy Perry of Crittenden Middle School is the division-wide Teacher of the Year.

The banquet was held in the Grand Ballroom at the Newport News Marriott at City Center.

Production Specialist Aaron Moore and Long discuss the plan before the shoot.

The NNPS-TV production team - Station Manager Jim Anklam, Producer Nik Long, and Production Specialist Aaron Moore - was there early to set up and prepare for the shoot.

It was a three-camera production, with everyone on the crew shooting at the same time.

Long took his camera off the tripod during the teacher recognition portion of the banquet. That allows him to get a close-up shot of the teachers accepting their awards. Later, during editing, that footage will be turned into slow-motion shots that highlight the dedicated teachers being recognized.

Anklam, in addition to recording on his video camera, experimented with a new DSLR camera, taking still photos and video with it, and also getting a few behind-the-scenes shots.

Moore edited the program for television. The biggest challenge for him was filling the time during each teacher's introduction when the titles and accolades are longer than the time spent shaking the hands of administrators, school board members, and politicians.

Fridays starting June 28 at 7 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 4 and 10 p.m.

To fill the time, Moore used the power point stills for each teacher, which display the teacher's name and a few classroom photos.

NNPS Graphic/Branding Services Coordinator Keli Slusher designed the slides to play on the big screen at the event.

"They ended up working well for us to use also," said Long.

"The combination of light-hearted photos, the slow-motion teacher footage, and the soft background music makes for an emotional tribute to each teacher," said Moore.

NNPS-TV is airing the Teachers of the Year Awards Banquet on Fridays at 7 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 4 and 10 p.m. Check the Program Guide for more dates and times.

The team also covered the elementary and secondary STARS Luncheon, which was held in April.
