When users navigate the NNPS-TV website with ease, stream online videos, enjoy the digital newsletter, check out the Twitter feed, or get information from the TV community bulletin board, they have Web Manager Beth Scott to thank.

Scott is a technically savvy, creative wordsmith, who runs the NNPS-TV website and writes the newsletter with innovation, accuracy, and consistency.

She was recently awarded a 2019 W³ Silver Award for the NNPS-TV website. According to their website, "the W³ Awards celebrates digital excellence by honoring outstanding Websites, Web Marketing, Video, Mobile Sites/Apps & Social content created by some of the best interactive agencies, designers, and creators worldwide."

“I have always loved words, writing, images, and layout, so running a website is great for me,” she said.

Scott's passion for communication enriches her work. Nearly 10 years ago, she created "Studio Scene," a monthly newsletter emailed to subscribers and a variety of NNPS students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators. Scott writes stories and creates web pages that are used in the newsletter and which make up the news content for the NNPSTV.com website.

The digital periodical contains stories and news about the interesting activities of the NNPS-TV production team as well as those of the TV Production students. It also highlights current programming and gives information about the upcoming School Board meetings.

But NNPSTV.com and "Studio Scene" are just two "products" requiring a multitude of tasks that Scott manages. She also maintains a YouTube site for NNPS-TV, which includes 30 playlists of video content produced in-house. She manages video.nnpstv.com., too, which is a proprietary video site that also ports over to NNPS-TV's Roku and Apple TV channels for live streaming and on-demand videos. She designed the look and set-up of those channels in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Scott also maintains the NNPS-TV community information bulletin board, which airs on the channel in-between scheduled programming. She handles requests from schools and the community, converting graphics for TV or creating and designing them herself. She makes sure NNPS announcements are scheduled as well as safety reminders and other "public service" information. Additionally, Scott manages the NNPS-TV Twitter account.

Of course, managing these different systems and websites requires multitasking with efficiency. Scott is organized and proficient with a variety of web tools and web production programs like Dreamweaver and Photoshop.

Scott also knows that as technology changes and new guidelines are established, she must continue learning and adapting. For example, over the past few years, Scott updated many aspects of the NNPS-TV website to be more “accessible,” meaning following the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. This allows people with disabilities who use screen readers or other assistive technology to still be able to use the website.

“The rules and recommendations are sometimes contrary to what web design and coding calls for, and if you add in making it work in an email newsletter, too, it can be difficult.”

Silver award
The NNPS-TV website won a 2019 W³ Silver Award.

When Scott started at NNPS-TV 2009, she had no idea what she was about to jump into.

“I inherited a website created using the "Joomla!" open source content management system, which I had to teach myself in order to update and redesign the site. It’s a very quirky system and some things are not intuitive, so it was not easy.”

Scott immediately began streamlining the processes needed to reconfigure and maintain the website. She also added more features to provide news and information to families and the community, along with a user-friendly interface to find and watch videos produced by NNPS-TV and Telecom students and staff.

As difficult as it might be, Scott figures out how to navigate forward to success, so she is always busy. Even so, she always has time to help out co-workers.

"As a producer who is constantly writing scripts," said NNPS-TV Producer Nik Long, "I value her input and ideas on scripts.  And when it comes to placing content online, she’s quick to serve our viewers and educators with excellence, acting quickly and proficiently to insure our websites are accurate and timely."

When she’s not at NNPS-TV, Scott continues working as a devoted wife and mother. She also takes time to enjoy boating, waterskiing, and playing soccer. Watching soccer is another one of her favorite activities, especially to cheer on the U.S. Women’s National Team. And if watching a soccer tournament also means traveling to new places and seeing old friends, then it doesn’t get much better than that.

Scott readily adds a few more items to her list of favorites: “I am a huge supporter of anything chocolate," she says. "And I love warm weather and going to the theatre and concerts.”

Scott’s abilities and skills allow her to bring valuable insights and expertise to a unique position for the NNPS school system. She helps the whole NNPS-TV team communicate in the best possible ways, while maintaining data systems, learning new technology, and telling great stories.
