Katherine Diaz has been named as the Mayor’s Youth Citizen of the Year for 2009-2010.

She received the honor during the Newport News Boards and Commission Reception at the Virginia Living Museum. 

Katherine, a senior at Woodside High School and Telecommunications, will serve as Youth Ambassador, and a youth spokesperson at City functions and events, receive a $100 savings bond, an award and a gift pack from the City.

As a Telecom student, Katherine co-hosted a recent episode of the student-produced news-magazine style show "On the Scene."

Katherine's accomplishments include volunteering at both Pearl Bailey Library and the Doris Miller Community Center Summer Camp, tutoring children and her peers in math and English, and serving as Vice President of the Pearl Bailey Library Teen Advisory Committee.  She received the 2008 Newport News Human Rights Award for her service in promoting human rights for youth, volunteering in Haiti with her church outreach ministry.  She also produces "Wake-Up Woodside" at her school, and volunteers at a church soup kitchen. 

The nominations for the award were open to all high school students in Newport News.  To be nominated, students must have shown excellence in community service, leadership and citizenship. Katherine was chosen from 36 students nominated.
