Telecom students and the (Police) Chief's Advisory Board, which represents the youth of Newport News, have teamed up to get the word out about texting and driving: It's unsafe and illegal.

The students are creating a public service announcement to air on NNPS-TV, which can be seen on Cox Cable channel 47 and on Verizon FiOS channel 17.

Telecom Educational Supervisor Ray Price and Instructor Brian Perkins were on hand to guide the students, who recorded interviews with fellow students and police officers about the Virginia law that prohibits the use of handheld personal communications devices while driving.  Drivers under the age of 18 are also prohibited from using cell phones while driving.

In addition to the interviews, Telecom students recorded teens getting into a car and driving, and a police officer pulling over a driver and writing a ticket.

Telecom students will also devote a segment of their news-magazine show, "On the Scene," to the cell phone driving safety laws.
