30 years of TV at NNPS: 'Homework Television'

HTV setBack in the early 1980s, cable television was new and a channel called "MTV" was all the rage. It was the first channel to continuously show music videos, with vee-jays (video jockeys) instead of disc jockeys hosting the show. Fast forward a few years to 1989, and NNPS-TV (then Newport News Cable Channel 36) is airing "HTV," where the H stands for homework instead of the M standing for music. Read more.

NNPS-TV's 'This Just In' celebrates Lucky 7

Lucky 7The NNPS-TV school news show "This Just In" - a weekly show - has been produced without fail for seven years! The first episode aired on March 1, 2010. The news team has been "spreading the word" about the good things happening in Newport News Public Schools ever since. They credit news tips from teachers and administrators for the show's longevity, but a lot of planning, skill, and team work on their part has been essential to its success.

Telecom students compete at SkillsUSA district event

SkillsUSATelecom students competed at the SkillsUSA District 4 Leadership and Skills Conference in February in categories such as job interview, essay, and Quiz Bowl. Students who placed in their category were awarded medals at a luncheon at the end of the month. Cheyanne Brooks received a first place medal for the essay contest, and can compete in the state competition.  Muriel Gamble and Courtney Luther came in third place for scrapbook and the Quiz Bowl team placed third.

Student News

Telecom logoTV I students are working on short news segments called "What's Newsz?" Each student will write a script, record and edit a package that will be a part of the segment, and direct his or her segment.

TV II students just finished producing and directing their own "Focus" show for their final three college credits.

Representatives from Lynchburg College visited with Telecom students last week, giving them information about the Communications Department and sports production opportunities there, with the "Lynchburg Hornets Sports Network" (LHSN). They also discussed paid and unpaid internships that Telecom students would be eligible for. They were impressed with the Telecom curriculum and the production opportunities available, and said the students could start working with LHSN as freshmen because of their experience.

What's showing

This month, NNPS-TV is airing "My Blog," a show for middle school kids featuring .... middle school kids! Using a blog format, they discuss how to solve problems and navigate life. Also showing is "Barney’s Barrier Reef," a fun adventure under the sea that explores the ecosystem of the Great Barrier Reef. Writing tips and encouragement from authors are offered on "Meet the Author."

Chris Sawyer, Stratford U.The March episode of "Sports Highlights" has interviews with Chris Sawyer, Athletic Director at Stratford University, and Mark Tomlin, Associate Athletic Director of Finance & Facilities at The Apprentice School. Watch the show on NNPS-TV (Cox 47/FiOS 17) on Mondays at 7 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m., and weekends at 9 a.m. Online, visit or the NNPS-TV Roku channel during the TV broadcast to see it on the live webstream. The NNPS-TV Video site is another way to watch.

Fuzion FitnessEpisode #39 of "Fuzion Fitness with Alexis" is here!  It was recorded at Buckroe Beach and is sure to get you moving! Check out the credits at the end for the names of the musical artists. You can watch Fuzion on NNPS-TV Cox 47/FiOS 17 at 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. daily. And on Mondays, you can try a different Fuzion Fitness episode at 7:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. Watch the live web stream online or on Roku at those times, too, or watch it on demand on the NNPS-TV video site or YouTube or Roku!

The School Board Budget Hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, at 6:30 p.m. The School Board Meeting and Budget Approval will be held Tuesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings will be broadcast live on NNPS-TV (Cox 47/FiOS 17). The meetings can also be seen on the live web stream online or on the NNPS-TV Roku channel during the live TV broadcast and the re-plays.
