NNPS-TV and NNPS’s Family and Community Engagement team worked together in May to bring partner videos to students learning from home due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

With school canceled for the rest of the year, Family and Community Engagement Specialist Deborah Pope-Johnson reached out to local partners and NNPS-TV to find a way for partners to continue to support students even if they couldn’t go to the schools to interact with them.

With so much working and learning happening at home, Pope-Johnson, known as “P.J.,” thought sharing videos provided by the partners would be a way to keep the students engaged with the community, and vice versa.

NNPS-TV can be seen on Cox Channel 47, Verizon Fios 17, and via live stream on Roku and Apple TV.

The webstream may be seen online at nnpstv.com anywhere that has internet connectivity.

The partners, like The Mariners' Museum, Mad Science, and WAVY-TV 10, were more than happy to assist, and went to work creating short videos that teach a concept or an exercise or a craft, for example.

Some partners already had a collection of videos ready to share, like the Virginia Cooperative Extension's "Build Your Own" simple cooking videos and Arts for Learning's "Take 10" videos about story-telling, dance, music, and other arts.

About Family and Community Engagement

There are three influences in a student's life: families, schools, and communities. We believe when they work together, students do better.

NNPS-TV Webmaster Beth Scott worked with P.J. and the community partners to procure the videos, review them, and process them into the television playout system.

Master Control Operator Darrick White scheduled the partner videos amongst the usual NNPS-TV educational programming, particularly after the weekly news show, "This Just In."

NNPS-TV viewers, and especially NNPS students, have been able to enjoy new, local, educational content on TV, and the NNPS FACE partners know they are still connecting with the students they love to support.

The partners "came through in a big way for our NNPS student-families," said P.J. in a letter to the partners and those who collaborated on the project.
