The NNPS-TV production team has earned two AVA Digital Awards for their work creating videos for Newport News Public Schools.

According to AVA Digital Awards, it is "an international competition that recognizes excellence by creative professionals responsible for the planning, concept, direction, design and production of digital communication."

NNPS-TV's "State of the Schools 2021" video earned the highest score, giving it the Platinum Award, which is the highest award.

That video premiered on NNPS-TV Cox Channel 47/Verizon Fios Channel 17 on August 30. It took the place of a live event to ensure social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The State of the Schools video contained recorded comments from educators and students on-camera, footage from classroom and outdoor school activities, and explanatory graphics.

The NNPS-TV production team – Station Manager Jim Anklam, Producer Nik Long, and Production Specialist Aaron Moore – created the video over the course of many months. They recorded about 20 video statements in the studio as part of the project.

Recording for that video was particularly challenging in that the Telecommunications Building was undergoing major construction at the time, as a new HVAC system was being installed.

"NNPS Hybrid Learning" earned a Gold AVA Digital Award, the second-highest award.

The Hybrid Learning video showcases the super-human efforts of NNPS teachers to continue teaching their students during school closings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it explains how hybrid learning works.

The NNPS-TV production team used classroom shots, video of Zoom sessions, and interviews with a number of NNPS educators in the video.

The video highlights teacher excellence and innovation, which is always a priority of NNPS-TV.

Both videos were entered in the category "Long Form Video/Video News Release."

NNPS-TV has received other Platinum and Gold AVA Digital Awards in 2015, 2016, and 2021.
