NNPS's Salute to Success celebration honoring top students was recorded by the Telecom student crew. It is airing on NNPS-TV during the summer.

The Salute to Success Student Recognition Banquet honors academic achievement by students in Newport News Public Schools. Valedictorians and salutatorians from each high school are honored, along with those students in grades 9 through 11 who are ranked number one academically in their respective classes.

The banquet also honors students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program and the National Hispanic Recognition program, as well as seniors who have earned four or more Industry Certifications and those who have demonstrated extraordinary Civic Leadership.

The awards banquet was held at the Holiday Inn Newport News on June 2.

The Telecom TV crew included Telecom Supervisor Ray Price as Producer, Telecom Instructor Carl Daniels, Jr. as Director, and NNPS-TV Broadcast Engineer Mansoor Ahmed as Production Engineer. Telecom alumni and current Telecom students made up the rest of the crew.

Telecom students gain hands-on production experience working an event like the NNPS awards banquets. They are able to work as camera operator, audio technician, or technical director, to name a few of the positions. They receive an hourly wage as well.

The awards show may be viewed online during the TV broadcast by clicking on the Watch Live button on the nnpstv.com home page, or by going directly to nnpstv.com/webstream.

The Salute to Success can also be seen on the student channel on YouTube.

The event is sponsored by the Newport News Education Foundation, which supports the public school division in its efforts to prepare students for work. The first banquet was held in 1993.
